Sleep Isn’t the Problem… Your Stress Load Is
Why Sleep is Harder (and More Important) Than Ever
If you’re training hard but still waking up exhausted, there’s one area you’re probably missing – sleep.
At 5th Element Wellness, our personal trainers see it every day: clients working hard in the gym, eating well, but struggling to see results because their recovery – especially sleep – is poor.
Sleep is the foundation for fat loss, muscle recovery, and your overall wellbeing. Without it, even the best personal training program stalls.
Why Sleep is Harder (and More Important) Than Ever
Our modern lifestyle keeps us wired – screens, late-night emails, high-stress days – pushing your nervous system into constant fight or flight.
The result? You feel “tired but wired,” struggling to switch off and truly recover.
That’s why sleep hygiene matters: Creating routines and environments that support your body’s ability to recover.
The Sleep Hygiene Blueprint – How to Build a Routine that Works
✔️ Manage Stress During the Day
The better you manage stress, the easier you’ll sleep. Tools we recommend:
- Infrared sauna (available at 5th Element Wellness Fitzroy North)
- 10 minutes of daily meditation or breathwork
- Gentle stretching or walking
✔️ Time Your Workouts for Better Sleep
- Do cardio in the morning to build fatigue and set your circadian rhythm.
- Strength training is best done mid-to-late afternoon.
- Avoid high-intensity sessions too close to bedtime — it spikes cortisol and delays sleep.
✔️ Use Nutrition as a Sleep Tool
- Include carbs with dinner — they help lower cortisol.
- Avoid late-night sugar — it’s a stimulant.
- Limit caffeine to mornings (before 11 am) — afternoon coffees stay in your system and disrupt sleep.
✔️ Optimise Your Sleep Environment
Your bedroom should help you sleep — not keep you stimulated.
- Remove your phone (get an alarm clock)
- No screens after 9:30 pm
- Use soft lighting or salt lamps
- Make your bed a sleep-only zone — not a Netflix lounge or workspace
Why You’re Sleeping But Still Waking Up Exhausted
Here’s the trap most people fall into: they hit 7-8 hours of sleep but wake up tired because stress hasn’t been cleared from their nervous system.
You sleep, but only skim the surface — never releasing the layers of fatigue and stress your body carries.
The fix? Daily recovery habits like sauna, meditation, and stretching help lower stress levels — so your sleep can actually work for you.
