Fitzroy North Local Business Spotlight: Argo Fishop
Featuring local family-run Greek seafood eatery Argo Fishop
I love being able to shine a light on the people and businesses that make Fitzroy North feel like Fitzroy North.
This month’s Local Business Spotlight is Argo Fishop, our local Greek seafood eatery and fishmonger just down the road on Queens Parade. If you’ve ever trained with us at 5EW and then wondered where to grab something fresh, healthy, and seriously good afterwards, chances are someone has pointed you their way.
It’s run by Yannis and Milena, a local family who genuinely care about quality, community, and doing things properly. Proper down to earth locals. Big on freshness. Big on looking after their customers.
Here’s our chat.
1. What is Argo Fishop and what do you do?
Yannis:
We’re a Greek seafood eatery and fishmonger.
People can come in and buy fresh Australian and New Zealand seafood to take home and cook themselves, or we can cook it for them. You can dine in or grab takeaway, whatever suits.
If I had to describe us simply, I’d say we’re a really high-quality seafood place that never compromises on freshness or sourcing, run by a local family who genuinely care.
2. How long have you been in business, and what sparked the idea to start it?
Yannis:
We’ve been open for over 12 years.
We moved to Melbourne from Athens, and seafood has always been a big part of our culture growing up. We wanted to bring those Mediterranean flavours and combine them with the amazing produce Australia has to offer.
Argo Fishop became our way of sharing that style of eating with the local community.
3. What makes Argo Fishop different from a typical fish & chips shop?
Yannis:
A lot of people think we’re just fish and chips, but we’re much more than that.
Quality is everything for us. We focus heavily on sourcing and freshness. The type of place where you can walk in, see the produce, talk to us, and know exactly what you’re getting.
You can pick something up to cook at home or sit down, have a proper meal, a glass of wine, and relax. It’s more of a neighbourhood spot than a takeaway shop.
And honestly, our fish burger is pretty famous. A few of the 5th Element crew swear by it.
4. Why is supporting local important to you?
Yannis:
Strong and connected communities are everything.
We love knowing our customers by name. Seeing the same faces each week. Watching families grow up around here.
When locals support each other, the whole area feels stronger and more alive. That’s the kind of neighbourhood we want to be part of.
5. What’s been your biggest lesson as a business owner?
Yannis:
Every detail matters.
From the way the seafood is displayed, to how it’s cooked, to how someone feels when they walk in the door. The small things add up. That’s what people remember.
6. What have you enjoyed about spending time at 5th Element Wellness?
Yannis:
What stood out straight away was how much the trainers actually care.
It feels personal. You’re not just another number like you can be at bigger gyms.
I liked the focus on overall health, not just workouts. Things like nutrition, recovery, and using the infrared sauna after training. The sauna was always a favourite. It’s such a good way to switch off after a long day.
The whole place just feels more human and community-based, which fits how we try to run Argo Fishop too.
7. Where can people find you?
Yannis:
Come say hi.
